Black's Surnames of Scotland may have an explanation of this 'Caithness' conundrum. The surname 'Caithness' is described thus:
"CAITHNESS. This surname is not derived from the northern county of the name but is a corruption of Kettins, the name of an old barony in Angus. A canonry in the church of Brechin was conferred on Robert de Kethenis in 1345 (REB., n, 391), and in 1347 Ingram de Ketenis was granted a canonry of Aberdeen ..."1,2,3,4
