James was 22 years old, a baker journeyman and a bachelor. Betsy was 18 years old, a factory linen worker and a spinster. James resided at 9 Horsewater Wynd, Forfar. Betsy resided at 20 Victoria Street, Forfar. James's parents were James Waddell, (deceased) a general labourer and Ann Doig. Betsy parents were James McDonald, railway engine driver and Helen Allan. James and Betsy were married by G. M. Philps, Minister East Free Church, Forfar. Witnesses were William Waddell and Charlotte McDonald. The marriage was registered on the 14th June 1886 at Forfar, Registrar W. H. Thomson.1
