    Pup was at Tel-al Kebir in Egypt in May 1916. DuringtheGallipolilandings and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of theFirstWorld War,Tel-al Kebir was a training centre for the FirstAustralianImperialForce Reinforcements, No 2 Australian stationaryhospital, andalso asite of a large prisoner of war camp. Some 40,000Australianscampedin a small tent city at Tel-al Kebir of six miles inlength.Amilitary railway was eventually constructed to take troopsfromthecamp to their vessels in Alexandria and elsewhere forembarkationtoGallipoli landings. The Tel-al Kebir village wasdescribed byanAustralian soldier in 1916 as a very dirty little placewith afewdirty shops in it.
    Pup is recorded as being wounded in France on 14 November1916.It'ssaid he was very badly injured at Gallipoli (Turkey) in theBattleofthe Dardenelles.
    He served a total of 1 year 237 days, of which 1 year 77 dayswasservedoverseas. He was discharged on 6 June 1917, being unfitforservice onaccount of wounds received in action.

    Pup's nephew Frederick ('Snowy') FOX remembered seeing hisuncleleavingto go to war.
    His niece Dardenella ('Della') GEAR was named after the BattleoftheDardenelles when born in 1915. between 1916 and 1917 at Tel-al Kebir, Egypt (1916); Etaples, France (1916).3,1
